Trace Chemotherapy Disposal

What is trace chemo waste?

trace-chemotherapyChemotherapy wastes are characterized as a hazardous chemical waste by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and must be managed as biomedical waste. Some types of chemo waste may not be disposed of as trace chemotherapy waste, although they are still considered RCRA hazardous waste. Trace chemotherapy waste is disposed of via incineration. The term “bulk” chemotherapy is defined as chemo waste that exceeds 3% by volume and is considered a RCRA hazardous waste. Trace chemotherapy wastes exhibit the following traits:

  • Toxicity
  • Reactivity
  • Ignitability
  • Corrosivity

A number of items that are used in the preparation and administration of antineoplastic or cytotoxic drugs (chemotherapy infusions) can become trace-contaminated. A list of commonly contaminated items include:

  • Barriers
  • Gloves
  • Spill Clean-Up Material
  • Masks
  • Gowns
  • Empty Intravenous Bags/Bottles
  • Empty Drug Vials
  • IV Tubing

A number of chemotherapy drugs are regulated as a hazardous chemical waste. These include but are
not limited to:

  • Chlorambucil
  • Diethylstilbestrol
  • Streptozotocin
  • Cyclophosphamide
  • Melphalan
  • Uracil mustard
  • Daunomycin
  • Mitomycin C
